Sony getting set to launch NFC speaker for Xperia NFC smartphones

Sony over at CES featured more NFC solutions and gadgets than anyone else including an NFC speaker that team members let us know that they would be releasing soon in the US. Creating use cases for NFC was very evident at various Sony CES booths, and we still have more to share with you in upcoming posts. We first saw a low-end NFC speaker from Sony at 4G World where we got a personal demonstration from NFC Forum Chairman, Koichi Tagawa. However, the NFC speaker on show at CES was a few steps up from that initial NFC speaker we saw.

Sony representatives at CES had no pricing or release dates for the speakers, but the Bluetooth speaker that uses NFC for pairing did appear to be a production model and not a prototype. Sony hasn’t officially announced this speaker as an NFC speaker at this time and, in fact, the speaker on show didn’t support NFC. Although two separate members of the Sony team confirmed that NFC would be on board when this speaker is launched.

Sony to release more NFC accessories beyond the NFC speaker this year

NFC Rumors was also told that Sony would be launching more NFC accessories this year and we can speculate that NFC headphone and NFC earbuds will be on the menu. So, two NFC smartphones that come in the Sony Xperia ION and Sony Xperia S flavors. We also saw Xperia smart tags announced, and in other booths we found a plethora of NFC healthcare products supported by Sony. Add to that the NFC speaker system Sony told us about and becomes evident that the firm sees itself supporting Near Field Communication.

It makes sense that Sony would support NFC in a big way, although it is surprising that the co-inventor of NFC isn’t shouting its NFC message from the rooftops at this point. We didn’t get to hear the Sony NFC speaker in action because to be frank the noise level at the Sony booth was just too loud. We do, however, look forward to getting to review this Sony NFC speaker when it is officially launched.
