At a large product launch like Google Wallet the executives tend to chuck statistics around like they are going out of fashion, and if you are like us you remember them for a tenth of a second and then they are gone.
We thought we’d make a round-up Google Wallet statistics for your perusal and viewing pleasure.
Google Wallet Statistics
- Ten years ago 70% of consumers surveyed said they would not use the internet for financial transactions. —Yankelovich 1998
- Today 70% of consumers would make purchases online. —ComScore 2009
- In the last 6 months, Android accounts for 50% of all phones that came to market.
- Android already has 100 million phones in the market.
- Google is activating over 400,000 phones a day.
- E-commerce poised to exceed a trillion dollars by 2013.
- By 2014 50% of smartphones will have NFC.
- By 2014 150 million phones will have NFC. That’s a lot of phones!
MasterCard Google Wallet Statistics
- Google Wallet can be used at one of 300,000 PayPass locations globally.
- Google Wallet can be used at one of 100,000 PayPass locations in the U.S.
- Over 20,000 merchants in the U.S. are ready to go with Google Wallet.
Although there is a discrepancy between the 20,000 and the 100,000 figures stated, we think that one represents POS systems that are ready to go and the larger figure represents the rest that would need an upgrade to accept Google Wallet payments.

First Data Google Wallet Statistics
- First Data process 40 billion transactions per year.
- First Data process transactions for 700 million card numbers.
- First Data has about 4 million merchant locations in the US where they process payments.
