With all the talk around NFC phones, we bet it has crossed your mind that there is nary a word about NFC PC’s, NFC laptops and NFC tablets making the rounds. Well thanks to Broadcom that’s about to change with the addition of two little chips. Allow us to introduce you to the BCM5882 and BCM5883 which are due to make their début in a gadget near you. In fact, these chips are already in production so if you have had a hankering for an NFC tablet or have a burning desire to wave your phone in front of your NFC PC or NFC laptop, you should only have a few months until your favorite gadget maker implements this fine little chip into its product line. NFC Rumors reported this last week on how important Broadcom felt NFC would be over the next few years. What we didn’t know is how soon they planned to bring NFC PC’s, NFC laptops or NFC tablets to the point of reality.
A little tech talk about the chips that will allow us to have NFC PC’s, lovely NFC laptops or terrific NFC tablets.
Broadcom’s new SOC or (system on a chip) is built around an ARM Cortex M3 processor. If you are not aware of what ARM does, they design the lovely power sipping processors we find in our smartphones and tablets these days, so Broadcom’s choice of processor makes a lot of sense to build their new NFC chips around. But these chips are not just capable of NFC for the NFC PC’s, NFC tablets and laptops, they have more tricks up their sleeve. They have and we quote:“Coherent security model encompassing key technologies such as Bluetooth, NFC, GPS and Wi-Fi”.
Security comes by ways of a integrated Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 1.2 secure cryptoprocessor. The chips work by staying separate to your working memory on your NFC PC, NFC tablet or NFC laptop which massively firms up security.
Are you ready for the onslaught of biometric enabled NFC PC’s, NFC laptops or NFC tablets to go with your NFC phone?
Did we mention these chips have on-chip fingerprint authentication processing that can run custom secure applications? Broadcom, like us, feels you need the ability to have biometric security on a NFC tablet, NFC PC or NFC laptop. We feel going forward this will become very important to consumers with the increasing use in mobile devices that house our personal financial data. If you would like to know more about biometrics, click here to see our post on the subject.
We are going to have more to talk about NFC PC’s, these chips impact on NFC and the goals of broadcom for these NFC chips. But in the meantime, sit back and dream about your future NFC tablet, NFC PC or NFC laptop or perhaps all three to go with your future NFC phone?
