SCM Microsystems launched a new commercial NFC reader module it feels will hit the spot as an add-on for  a wide range of devices and uses, including but not limited to POS terminals, vending machines and handheld card readers. In its press release the company envisions the NFC reader being utilized for secure data exchange applications such as cashless payments, ticketing, electronic ID and loyalty coupons. This cost effective solution could bring a cost effective way for smaller retailers to have NFC reader POS terminals or registers as digital wallets gain momentum.

NFC reader POS terminal add-on connects via USB

SCM revealed that the reader module plugs into an existing device via USB to make it NFC ready and enable contactless data exchanges and transactions. The device is also said to have a small footprint which will make it attractive for mobile applications such as event ticket sales. They also revealed the module is available now to system integrators and OEM’s, so what are you waiting for? Get coding! The unit is available with either an integrated or optional external antenna.

SMC plans to launch an NFC software development kit and said that the SCM3712 module would be included. The SDK will also include NFC Forum tags as software, drivers and tools. The company simply states the SDK will be available mid 2011.

As far as compatibility goes, the SCM3712 will of course support ISO 14443 and the usual suspects in the tag world including FeliCa, NFC peer-to-peer functionality, and it will be fully capable of handling NFC Forum-compliant tags based on MIFARE, FeliCa and Topaz technology as well as NFC-enabled mobile phones or other devices.
