Recent NFC statistics

In the last few weeks NFC statistics have been flying around faster than the GOP can lose another candidate. Everything seems to accelerated since Google unveiled its Google Wallet and the amount of information being pumped out to the web can become dizzying. In fact, a new NFC statistic comes out faster than an online bank can sue a search engine. Okay, okay enough of the really bad analogies.

Credit card and banking NFC statistics

The following NFC statistics come from the credit card companies, and as you can tell they are feeling bullish about NFC:

  • Visa predicts 20 million UK contactless cards in circulation by the end of the year.
  • Google Wallet, which utilizes MasterCard’s PayPass, will work at more than 311,000 locations globally and at 124,000 in the U.S. alone.
  • MasterCard survey find that 62% of people surveyed are open to using their cellphones as Mobile Wallets.
  • As of the first quarter of 2011, more than 92 million PayPass cards and devices have been issued worldwide.
  • Google Wallet alone could mean 150 Million annually for VeriFone.
Several industry sectors are already publishing NFC statistics…

Cell phone and smartphone NFC statistics

For the credit card companies to reach their goals we all have to have NFC-enabled devices so here are the cell & smartphone NFC statistics:

  • Juniper Research projects that NFC phones will be responsible for and exceed $75 billion in global sales by 2013.
  • Google said at its Google Wallet unveiling By 2014 150 million phones will have NFC.
  • Juniper Research projects by 2013 that 20% or 1 in 5 mobile phones shipped will be NFC-enabled
  • Juniper Research projects 500 million people worldwide will use their mobile phones for metro and bus tickets by 2015, which is 5 times the amount used last year. Juniper also points out this will probably happen because NFC is now proliferating outside of Japan.
  • Juniper Research forecasts that 300 million cell phones will be NFC capable by 2014.
  • Juniper Research projects that North America will account for more than half of all NFC smartphones in 2014, followed by Western Europe in market share.
  • Google said at its Google Wallet unveiling that by 2014, 50% of smartphones will have NFC.

Economic NFC statistics

Even countries and continents are getting in on the act. Seems like everyone has a payday coming. Here are some of the economic NFC statistics:

  • Global Industry Analysts, Inc. project globally Chipless RFID Tags market will reach $2 billion by 2017.
  • M-commerce industry will add 19 billion pounds to the British economy by 2016 and a further 13 billion by 2022 says eBay UK.
  • Juniper Research projects that global annual transaction value will grow 5 times between 2011 and 2013.
  • Juniper Research projects that NFC’s growth will be fueled by 20 early adopting countries.
  • French Government to Offer Up to €20 million in NFC Funding for Cities.
  • The new Grand NFC Korean Alliance, composed of both government bodies and technology companies, plan is to generate around $1 billion in production revenue, $320 million in “added values,” and around 5,700 jobs over the next five years.

Travel & retail NFC statistics

Obviously the retail sector needs to invest to be able to accept NFC payments but it looks as if it may very well be worth it when you look at the travel and retail NFC statistics:

  • Juniper Research projects that one in seven boarding passes will be mobile by 2013.
  • Subway is looking forward to improving the shopping experience for 30 million customers with NFC.
  • Juniper Research forecasts that 480 million boarding passes will be mobile by 2013 which is treble the 160 million this last year.
  • McDonald’s has deployed 1200 contactless terminals across its UK restaurants, Starbucks to follow suit.

Marketing NFC Statistics

You can always trust marketers to have arms full of stats as they deal in intangibles. Here are some of the related NFC statistics coming out of marketing:

  • The number of consumers accessing web content from their mobile devices jumped 74% to 13 million. Of the 13 million, more than 6.5 million accessed retail content one to three times per month.
  • Millennial Media claims its ad network reaches 92 million mobile users nationwide  per month and 142 million users globally per month.
  • Ofcom, the British telecommunications watchdog, reported that currently only 3.6 million UK households or 17%, use their mobiles for broadband access.

We certainly can’t verify these NFC statistics and most of them are purely speculative, but they are making news headlines none the less. We will revisit this subject in posts to come and it will be fun to see what happens and what NFC statistics seem ridiculous in the fullness of time.
