It’s been a while since we have heard anything about Nokia’s NFC peripherals that use NFC as a connection to speakers, headsets and HiFi systems. Today, however, we are seeing that a new model we hadn’t previously expected to make its way through the FCC, as reported on MyNokiaBlog. In fact, we had only heard of this model through Nokia Connection in Singapore. The Nokia NFC Wireless Music Receiver MD-20W is not the model we expected to see Stateside. Nokia unveiled the Nokia Wireless Music Receiver MD-310 back when it announced the N9 NFC phone and nary a word has been heard about it since, aside from a few YouTube videos. From what we can tell, the MD-20W shares similar, if not the same, attributes and features as the MD-310 and what’s even more curious is that it has officially said that it won’t be launching the N9 in the United States.

The existence of the MD-20W NFC Wireless Music Receiver and the fact it is now coming through the FCC tends to suggest that we may be seeing some new Nokia NFC phone in the near future. We find it hard to imagine after the poor sales of the Symbian C7 Astound that Nokia would import this Wireless Music Receiver just for folks who bought an Astound. We know the N5, Zeta and Cindy are all waiting in the wings, but all has been quiet on the western front. Also, does this mean we may see the Nokia Play 360 coming through the FCC soon?
Nokia NFC Wireless Music Receiver MD-20W specifications
This little Nokia NFC gadget basically gets rid of the need to connect to an exterior source for audio from your phone. It does that by having an actual connection to your HiFi or home cinema system and then acts as the bridge and NFC and Bluetooth receiver. To connect to the device is simple with NFC, have the music app playing on your phone and tap it against the NFC Wireless Music Receiver and you are connected. It makes using your phone as an audio source frictionless.
Bluetooth comes in the 2.4Ghz variety and boasts a 30 meter indoor range (we would want that confirmed before you take it as gospel). Outside performance suggests that the unit will work up to 100 meters. We can’t yet find any difference between the Nokia NFC MD-20W and the MD-31o, so with that logic the MD-310 specifications are below.
