Samsung Nexus Prime NFC phone confirmed by Samsung in cease and desist legal letter

Well, if there was any doubt left out there that the Samsung Nexus Prime, Google Android pure experience NFC phone, existed that appear to have all but melted. Rumors surrounding the existence of the Samsung Nexus Prime have been circulating for months now and with the expected launch of the next rendition of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, the likelihood of a new Google phone is high. Many rumors are just that, myths that in a Chinese whisper fashion roam from tech blog to tech blog and become bigger as they go. Even mainstream media gets involved with the speculation of mobile devices including well respected newspapers. It is up to the savvy reader to discern  fact from fiction and to always treat information with a pinch of salt until multiple sources begin to backup the original rumor. Whether that be in the form of photographs of phones, phone parts or confirmation of component orders that manufacturers have received, spotting a rumor that has some backbone isn’t hard. Do you know what is better than all of the previous list in confirming a rumor? When the OEM accidentally outs itself as has happened with the Samsung Nexus Prime NFC phone.

Learning from legal about the Samsung Nexus Prime NFC phone

We are all human and we all make silly mistakes, say things we don’t mean or share a secret we didn’t even know was a secret. That is true of Samsung’s legal department. This last week, the lawyers in the know sent out a cease and desist letter to someone they thought had a copy of the Samsung Nexus Prime’s firmware. We have no idea who the letter was to, but Samsung didn’t want the files in the public domain because they would have no doubt revealed a whole lot more than the Samsung Nexus S NFC phone’s name. The letter published over at Geek.com said, “It has come to our attention that you are wrongfully in possession of, and intend to release or otherwise publicly disclose without Samsung’s consent, firmware for the Nexus Prime.” It  doesn’t stop there. “The Nexus Prime firmware is the exclusive property of Samsung and/or its partners, suppliers and affiliates.” The words “Nexus Prime” appeared five times throughout the letter, so this was no slip up in a turn of phrase. The letter was signed by Samsung’s General Counsel, Brian Hopkins. We have included a copy of the letter which has the recipient details blacked out below, simply click to enlarge.

What’s more than a little amusing here is that the firmware leak was only rumored and may not have existed at all and based on a rumor Samsung confirmed its own product. So, the cat is out of the bag and it appears that Samsung may indeed be getting primed for an October launch. Other rumors circulating about the Samsung Nexus Prime at this time are that the new NFC superphone may include some Android @ home features, facial recognition which would be a complete win for NFC and the biometric industry, and possibly Qi inductive charging. NFC is, of course, still a rumored inclusion, but one than can be pretty much assured of due to Google’s commitment to the technology and Google Wallets imminent release. We are also hearing that the NFC Samsung Nexus Prime may launch on Verizon with some LTE love.
