Fall into NFC: Google adds five new markets to Google Offers

This is another post in our Fall into NFC articles that highlight the unprecedented amount of announcements and launches of NFC related products and services that are rumored to happen this autumn. Google has today unleashed another five cities in its Google Offers application that is part of the Google Wallet experience and at this time represents Google’s primary revenue generation engine for its Google Wallet. Google Wallet is due to be released any week now and is set to be the first NFC mobile wallet to be available in the United States. We also reported exclusively yesterday that Google has a major announcement to make regarding its Google Wallet that isn’t about NFC payments within the next couple of weeks. El Goog’s move into the nascent NFC mobile wallet space isn’t what you would call an easy one. Isis and joint ventures are blocking access to the Mountain View company and PayPal is suing them over information obtained from ex-PayPal employees that the internet payments giant classifies as trade secrets.

Google Offers intensifies competition against Groupon

The offer business isn’t easy either. Facebook have bowed out after they couldn’t make a daily offers program work, but when you have a war chest like Google has, you can spend your way into an industry and that is exactly the approach the search giant is taking by adding another five cities on to its Offers offering. Google announced Google Offers at its Google Wallet press event back in May and initially only serviced Portland, Oregon. It then expanded Google Offers to include the San Francisco Bay are and also added New York City.

Today Google Offers is available in another five markets which include Austin, Texas, Boston, Mass., Denver, Colorado, Washington D.C. and Seattle, Washington State. If you live in one of those areas and are an Android owner you can now get Google Offers daily. Simply boot up the Google Shopper app and if you are located in one of the new areas you will see a tab that says Today’s Offer. Click it and the discounts are yours. When the Google Wallet is available and if you have an NFC phone, you will be able to access Google Offers straight from the application itself.
