INSIDE Secure allows you to turn your phone into an NFC phone

INSIDE Secure today announced its NFC card emulation solution that fits into a standard SIM card form factor. NFC SIM and NFC microSD cards are not new. So when the product comes to market, it will enable non-NFC phones. However, so far many NFC SIM and NFC microSD solutions haven’t gives a great NFC experience. Because these solutions are slotted inside of phones that weren’t designed with NFC in mind, other components have often affected read and write distances and generally held these products back. INSIDE Secure’s new solution is said to achieve industry standard 4cm or greater contactless read distances in a mobile device with an antenna footprint of less than 1cm2. If these performance claims are true, NFC SIM and NFC microSD solutions could be deployed en masse.

“INSIDE Secure is again demonstrating its leadership in the NFC market by providing a core enabling technology that will enable multiple new end products in SIM and microSD form-factors for use in legacy mobile devices, accelerating the adoption of NFC card emulation use cases within the currently deployed mobile phone market,” said Charles Walton, Chief Operating Officer at INSIDE Secure. “This breakthrough technology provides a means of bringing NFC services to markets that might otherwise not be immediately reachable through smart phone sales, such as in Brazil, India and African countries, or for any market with a large installed base of legacy mobile phones.”

INSIDE Secure says its new NFC card emulation solution works great with its embedded 1cm2 antenna for NFC payments

INSIDE Secure is demonstrating this new NFC card emulation solution  for the first time during the CARTES & IDentification 2011 conference and exhibition being held here this week.

“Until now, no one has been able to place a complete NFC solution, including antenna, into a SIM card, insert it into a mobile phone and have it perform well,” said Bruno Charrat, Chief Innovation Officer at INSIDE Secure. “The patented INSIDE innovation enables the creation of new products with very small antennas, less than one square centimeter, making feasible the commercial introduction of NFC enablement products using the SIM form factor as well as other inserted or embedded solutions.”

There is a widely accepted saturation rate of mobile phones in the world that total around 6 billion units. At this time, many of them are not NFC enabled, and a product like what INSIDE Secure has announced could spur on NFC adoption at a faster rate than had been projected before.

We aren’t likely to see any usable products using INSIDE Secure’s NFC card emulation solution until the back end of 2012. In the meantime, INSIDE Secure will develop products of its own and work with strategic partners to develop solutions for various markets that surround NFC payments.
