It was a blow when we learned that the Nokia N9 would give the US a miss. However, Amazon has the 16 GB black version NFC smartphone in stock for $649.99 off contract. Of course, third parties over at Amazon also have the 64GB NFC version also, but the Amazon version of the Nokia N9 lists Nokia as the seller. This does infer that Nokia decided not to sell the Meego powered Nokia N9 through carriers and instead has decided to get the phone into the market at a unsubsidized price.
Competition is tough for the NFC Nokia N9 at such a high price
With the Galaxy Nexus and Samsung Galaxy S II variants coming in at around the same price off contract it may be a hard sell. The Nokia N9 doesn’t support payments, but other than that it received glowing reviews for its OS and general aesthetics. We would have loved to have seen the stylish Nokia N9 available on contract from MNOs in the States but alas it appears that didn’t fly with Nokia’s plans for its Windows 7 based smartphones, which ironically don’t include NFC support. We think if Nokia decided to knock the price down it could sell lots of Nokia N9 NFC smartphones here in the US, so we are keeping our fingers crossed on that one.
