Samsung to launch retina resolution super NFC tablet in February?

Word on the street is that Samsung is prepping  a retina resolution super NFC tablet in February that’s due to be released at Mobile World Congress that features impressive specifications. This is a rumor reported over at BGR today. We all know the rivalry between Apple and Samsung has reached fever pitch and there is no love lost. With that in mind, hearing that Samsung is planning on launching a super high resolution NFC tablet before the iPad 3 gets out of the gate is probably not too much of a shock to many. The specifications of this rumored tablet could set it apart from the upcoming iPad 3. The rumor suggests that the new NFC tablet from Samsung will be launched at Mobile World Congress and not at CES. Although that said we received invitations for the Samsung press conference at CES and we wonder if Samsung might give us a sneak peek.

Rumored retina resolution NFC tablet specifications

We are still in rumor territory here, although it is very likely that Samsung is looking to replace its now aging Galaxy Tab lineup. We would imagine the new NFC tablet would still keep the Galaxy Tab moniker but that is purely speculation. We know the tablet is due to be an NFC capable device because the rumors circulating suggest the tablet will feature Android Beam and rock on Ice Cream Sandwich. Asus have thrown down the gauntlet by announcing its Eee Pad Transformer Prime that uses a Tegra 3 quad-core 1.3GHz processor but Samsung is said to be opting for a dual-core Exynos 5250 CPU clocked at 2GHz. This processor isn’t too different to Apple’s rumored A6 CPU otherwise known as a dual-core Cortex A15 chip.

The real must have feature with the rumored Samsung NFC tablet, however, is the display which is said to have a mind boggling 2560 x 1600 resolution on an 11.6-inch screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio. The Samsung NFC tablet is also reputed to be barely larger than the Galaxy Tab 10.1 because of a thinner bezel. It has also been suggested that the Samsung HD NFC tablet will have a wireless docking mode for gaming on HDTV’s which falls in line with an announcement that is due to be released by the WiGig alliance this next week.

What is clear is that 2012 will be the year for NFC tablets and Samsung appears to be coming out of the gate all guns blazing with Apple’s market share in its sights. Whether Apple will include NFC in its tablet or not is still to be identified. We also don’t know as yet whether the new Samsung HD NFC tablet will feature a secure element for NFC payments or access control, but rumors we are hearing is that Samsung is going into the access control business so we wouldn’t be surprised if it does because WiFi based NFC tablets don’t need carriers buy in.
