Google Wallet on Verizon Galaxy Nexus root free so it is safe to use!

Over the weekend we let you know the clever devs over at XDA Developers had rooted and hacked Google Wallet on to the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. We also advised that Galaxy Nexus owners should hold off from hacking the Verizon Galaxy Nexus because rooting the device could expose some sensitive data that a thief could get hold of. Just a day later and XDA Developers has released a version of the Google Wallet APK that doesn’t require rooting the device, and so you can now install the NFC mobile wallet safely!

Some users are reporting they can’t add funds to Google Wallet on the Galaxy Nexus

It isn’t all good news though, with the current version of the Google Wallet APK from XDA Developers Engadget is reporting that for the time being you cannot add more funds to your account. We aren’t sure whether this is a limitation that can be worked around. This could be an isolated case, but at this time we just don’t have more information due to the breaking nature of this news. Verizon doesn’t want the Google Wallet on its network and instead wants to disable the facility so it can push its own Isis offering to users later next year. That appears to have been a red rag to a bull, and Verizon not only took a beating in the media for controlling what services its subscribers could use, but has also attracted the attention of the XDA Developers who are known to be able to get around mobile network operator controls.

Users outside of the US aren’t able to use the Google Wallet on the Galaxy Nexus at this time. We think that is a limitation placed by Google due to the nature of their agreement with Citi. We will keep our ears close to the ground to see whether anyone gets around that issue and will report back though.

If you have a galaxy Nexus and have installed the Google Wallet APK from XDA Developers, please let us know how it went. Also let us know if you could successfully add fuss to your account. If you have the Verizon Galaxy Nexus and want to give the Google Wallet a whirl feel free to head over to the forum to get the Google Wallet APK by clicking here. What we know for sure is that today marks a blow for Verizon as its Galaxy Nexus now supports Google Wallet, and we can probably expect to see more NFC smartphones getting that ability on Big Red if XDA Developers get their way.
