Nokia N9 NFC phone starts shipping, fails to say where

Nokia has finally started shipping its Nokia N9 NFC smartphone around the world. In a press release today Nokia confirmed that the Nokia N9 will be in consumers’ hands imminently, but failed to say which markets would see the Nokia N9 and which carriers would be selling the first and last Nokia Meego device.

“Since we announced the Nokia N9 in June this year, the feedback that it has gotten from discerning and avid smartphone users across the world has been nothing short of fantastic,” said Ilari Nurmi, Vice President of Marketing at Nokia. “With the innovations in industrial design, user interface, and the Qt developer experience, the Nokia N9 sets the bar for how natural technology can feel, and represents the first in a number of products from Nokia that will be brought to life in similar fashion.”

Nokia N9 NFC phone launching in Australia on three mobile networks this October

Australia is going to get the Nokia N9 NFC phone next month (October) on three – count them, three – mobile network operators. Optus, Telsta and Vodafone have all signed up to bring another NFC phone down under. The Nokia N9 was denied the option of heading to the States, the UK and Germany but Australia has got lucky and will receive its Nokia N9 slabs of MeeGo goodness next month and Nokia has even put up a page to let you sign up to find out the exact date it will be in your area. The old Nokia is in its death throws before it shuts up shop and reopens as a Windows Phone only house, but the gang from Espoo want to go out with a bang and the Nokia N9 definitely qualifies in that arena of quirky coolness.

Nokia N9 NFC phone to give America and potentially UK a miss

We have been covering the Nokia N9 NFC phone for quite sometime. Nokia’s first and last MeeGo NFC phone made quite the stir when it was introduced, and many people have been waiting in anticipation for its release here in the United States. The guys over at Engadget have been trying every trick in the book to get Nokia to let us all know about a definite release date, as we already know Sweden and Switzerland have theirs and today they got some bad news. Nokia got back to them and said that they had no plans to launch the Nokia N9 NFC phone in the US.

Nokia said, “After the very positive reception to the launch of the Nokia N9, the product is now being rolled out in countries around the world. At this time we will not be making it available in the US. Nokia takes a market by market approach to product rollout, and each country makes its own decisions about which products to introduce from those available. Decisions are based on an assessment of existing and upcoming products that make up Nokia’s extensive product portfolio and the best way in which to address local market opportunities.”

Nokia N9 NFC phone is through the FCC, see the N9 naked

Nokia N9 NFC phone is through the FCC

On seeing the Nokia N9 NFC phone clear through the FCC, we can’t help reflect on the end of an era. The Nokia N9 NFC phone has looks that could kill and industrial design that would make an Apple fan look twice. It also flourishes a finish that screams quality and fun loving times, but those times are a changing. The simplified UI of MeeGo only adds the the Nokia N9′s charm and yet it will have no off spring, no cousins and no future outside of its current iteration, and that seems such a waste. Symbian is heading the way that the great lizards, dinosaurs and horse drawn cart went. Dodos prepare to meet great Nokia handsets of the past as they exit this plane of existence and become extinct, as Espoo ushers in the age of Microkia. Nokia MeeGo devices were said to be such a way forward, and yet the N9 will stand as the only example of its species for all time. In a year or two, we will reflect on what might have been if Nokia hadn’t put all its eggs in the Microsoft Windows Phone basket. But for now ladies and gentlemen, may we present the Nokia N9, a smartphone that is and will remain unique.

What the FCC documentation shows us about the mighty Nokia N9 NFC phone

On most FCC documents, you are lucky if you get a line drawing. Companies these days rely on secrecy to be able to make big splash announcements. That is certainly true of the Nokia N5 that just cleared the FCC yesterday. However, the Nokia N9 NFC phone has nothing to hide and was posted with a set of postmortem shots of its beautiful innards. Without further ado, here are the specs that were shared for the FCC’s purposes.

Nokia N9 MeeGo NFC Smartphone

Nokia has shown the world its second NFC Smartphone, the Nokia N9, which is the company’s first MeeGo phone. In case you find yourself saying WhoGo? MeeGo is an open source smartphone platform that has been built in a collaborative effort between Intel and Nokia. Stephen Elop, the head honcho over at Nokia, promised that the company would deliver a MeeGo Smartphone by the end of the year and thus it has appeared.

We must say the Nokia N9, which is also known as the Lankku, slab is easy on the eyes and will come in a veritable amount of bright colors as well as a really quite lovely matte black. In fact, these colors are part of the polycarbonate shell, so even scratches and dings only result in the uncovering of more of the same color because the case is colored all the way through.
