Freescale and Inside bring some NFC magic to utility meters in reference design

Freescale Semiconductor and INSIDE Secure has announced a secure prepaid electricity / utility meter reference design with NFC baked straight in. The new product is aimed at OEMs so they can quickly and cost effectively deploy NFC utility meters to market. Using NFC in utility meters is a very obvious use case and a vast market to be tackled. Every home has at least one utility meter and most have more than that. The new design is based on the Freescale Kinetis MK30 microcontroller (MCU), which provides the first NFC-based prepaid meter with the ability to securely reload energy credit balances. INSIDE Secure provides the VaultIC 460 and NFC (MicroRead 3.4) chipset. Gone are the days in the UK are sotting 50 pence pieces into old electricity meters. A new solution could be for NFC payments to top up electricity when required.

If you hang around the NFC industry for more than a nanosecond, you will soon become aware what a big deal NFC tags are. SMRT deploys NFC smartposters called iMobSMRT Seth Planck

2 million consumers to be exposed to NFC smartposters in Singapore as SMRT & Nokia launch iMobSMRT at public transportation locations

Train, bus and taxi company, SMRT, has partnered with Nokia to bring NFC smartposters they are calling iMobSMRT to daily commuters in Singapore. The iMobSMRT spaces allow daily travelers with NFC phones to make transactions, exchange digital content, and connect. The project with Nokia will see six of key high-traffic stations enabled with Near Field Communication. The NFC smartposters will initially be placed in Orchard, City Hall, Tampines, Jurong East, Woodlands and, very soon, Holland Village. The company then plans to gradually enable all of its locations.

ThingLink have announced that you can now print online interactive image links to an NFC tag that the company calls a "Rich Media Note."NFC tags that link to online printable interactive images is a twist on the firm's current service. Let us give you the history. ThingLink is a service that allows website owners to embed tags into images and then provides analytics for how those images are used within a user's websites. The launch project for ThingLink Labs is Rich Media Notes, a printable version of ThingLink images with Near Field Communications / NFC enabled Rich Media Tags that are readable by enabled smartphones and devices.

The Australian national media company, Adshel, has got together with Coles supermarkets to deploy an out-of-home (OOH) NFC marketing campaign. From a shaky start with endless banking trials, Australia seems to be embracing NFC in a big way. Companies like Adshel and Tapit aren't hurting the awareness campaign to educate Australians about the benefits of using NFC through NFC marketing. NFC marketing is one of exciting use cases for NFC and is arguably the glue that holds a lot of other services together, including NFC payments, loyalty, coupons and engaging content aggregation.

Download your copy of our NFC hotspot image. Over here at NFC Rumors, we are always developing something or other and one of projects at the moment involves a smart poster we are putting together. We had a look about online and found there really isn't any smart poster hotspot graphics available for anyone wanting to design a marketing piece for themselves and so we developed our own (which isn't unusual around here.) The editor took one look at it and said we should give it away on the site to NFC Rumors readers and so that's what we are doing. We're providing the NFC hotspot graphic as a vector image (EPS) a Photoshop file (PSD) and as a transparent image (PNG) so there should be a version that works for you.

NFC marketing campaign fashioned as a crime scene storefront promotes TNT show Rizzoli & Isles

NFC marketing is becoming a bigger concept by the day with the use of NFC tags. We have seen NFC smart posters already being trialled but the TV network TNT took things to the next level with the help of Blue Bite and their partner in crime, Pearl Media, to create a downtown NFC crime scene storefront in New York City. The campaign focuses on promoting TNT's top-rated drama show, Rizzoli & Isles, and used a storefront to act as an interactive crime scene. We are not sure whether to call it an exhibit or marketing piece, but either way the campaign proved to be an effective way to prove that people love interacting with NFC based marketing media. Both TNT and the marketing companies involved are claiming that this campaign represented the first NFC storefront in the US, and who are we to disagree?

TNT show Rizzoli & Isles NFC marketing campaign details

The innovative NFC marketing campaign was set to run for a month leading up to the second season release of the show and used a storefront to represent a highly integrated “crime-solving” crime scene in New York City. We have covered Blue Bite's exploits before, and like before the company supplied their mTag solution that allowed participants who walked past the storefront to take part in solving the staged crime.

Long live print marketing. We remember the days where a mailing list sorted by zip code, demographics and house hold income was all you needed. Put that with some compelling collateral with a decent call to action and that resulted in to a 2% to 9% hit rate. On many occasions the local newspaper circulation fitted your needs wonderfully so you didn't even have to mount a mailing campaign at all. Those days are gone and the newspapers are dying in their physicals forms. The general public has become blind to advertising from over exposure, and print marketing's effectiveness has lessened every day since. But there is still TV, right?
